The Geraghty family of Westport presented artefacts connected with Brigadier General Joe Ring to Westport Historical Society at the Clew Bay Heritage Centre. The artefacts consisted of a portrait, a rifle, a height measure and an engagement ring. They were all in the care of the late Broddie (nephew of Joe Ring) and Nora Geraghty of Carrabawn, Westport.
The handing over of the artefacts was arranged by Captain Claire Mortimer (grand-niece of Joe Ring) who currently works in Military Archives. The function was attended by members of the Geraghty family and by Minister Michael Ring (grand-nephew of Joe Ring).
Brigadier General Joe Ring was actively involved as a member of the Irish Volunteers and West Mayo Flying Column in the years leading up to and including the War of Independence. He went on to join the National Army and also played a major part in the setting up of the Civic Guard (Garda Síochána). He was killed in an ambush by Anti-Treaty Forces in September 1922 near Bonniconlon in North Mayo.
